Government of the Republic of Karelia carried out interaction with telecoms operators concerning organization of communication to satisfy the demand of the population and enterprises of the republic for modern services of communication. Agreements are in force between the Government of the Republic of Karelia and the largest enterprises of the branch, such as North-West Telecom, Inc., Russian Post federal state unitary enterprise, Russian Television and Broadcasting Network federal state unitary enterprise. Mobile operators VimpelCom, Inc., MTS, Inc., Megafon, Inc., develop actively. Now cellular communications are available in all regional centers of Karelia, on the basic tourist objects, such as Kizhi island, Valaam island, Marcial Waters spa, on federal and republican highways. In territory of the republic the number of subscribers to the fixed local telecommunication in 2009 has made more than 215,000 units, and the number of subscribers to mobile radio telephone communication is more than 908,000 units.
Within the scope of the federal target program Development of TV and Radio Broadcasting in the Russian Federation in 2009-2015 the Russian television and broadcasting company is implementing the project of development of digital multiprogramme TV and radio broadcasting. Development of the system project for territory of the republic which at the 1 stage provides almost 99% of the population of republic with 8 TV channels and 3 broadcasting channels is nearing completion. In 2010 project installation of the equipment on the operating objects, construction of additional television stations will be carried out.
The largest representative of cellular communication operators is Karelian regional office of the Northwest branch of Open Joint-Stock Company MegaFon providing high-quality communication and the largest zone of radiocovering in the Republic of Kareliya through the network of 280 base stations 212 of which provide communication in the regions. The number of subscribers to the Karelian regional office makes 530 thousand people.
Thanks to assistance of the Government of the Republic of Karelia it was possible to keep the network of branches of post service in territory of the republic, and, first of all, in the countryside. Issues were solved concerning transfer of the premises occupied by branches of the post service to the federal property, the lowered property tax rate was preserved, issues concerning delivery of postings, pensions, grants, printed matters to distant settlements of the republic were solved promptly.
