Cooperation between Karelia and Sweden in the sphere of social service lasts since 1998. For this period of time the parties have joined in the project on which they work till now.

As a whole, the project consists of three trends. One of them is concentrated on work with children without care of parents, the second is devoted to work with youth on prevention of the use of drugs and preventive maintenance of criminality, and the third is rehabilitation of senior persons. The administration of the project is carried out by the social service of Umea at financial support of SIDA, the Swedish agency on development of international cooperation.

The administration of Petrozavodsk, the Ministry of Labor and Social Development of the RK, and also Children's Home N3, the social rehabilitation center for minors "Nadezhda (Hope)" and the Center of social service "Istoki (The sources)" participate in the project from the Russian side. During this visit 17 Swedish visitors worked in groups in these social institutions of Petrozavodsk. They shared theoretical knowledge and experience with our experts and got acquainted with the practical achievements their Russian colleagues could introduce to them.
