The investment project Swedwood-Karelia at participation of Swedwood Group concern, the largest industrial division of IKEA company, has started in Kostomuksha.

Swedwood international industrial group was founded in 1991 and is the basic supplier of production for IKEA trading concern, the world leader in manufacture of furniture and household goods. Swedwood carries out one of directions of work of IKEA being engaged in production and manufacture, and includes factories on furniture and furniture boards manufacture, as well as saw-mills. Now Swedwood group includes 36 enterprises in 12 countries of the world. Annually the company opens four to five new factories. The company has opened the first Russian factory in the summer of 2002 in the Tikhvin area of Leningrad region.

According to the arrangements achieved in last October between the management of the company and the Government of Karelia, and the general agreement signed by Sergey Katanandov and Swedwood International AB company Vice-president Nils Skarbaek, Swedwood company on the results of the competition will take in rent of 250 thousand cubic metres of the Karelian wood in Kalevala and Yushkozero timber enterprises.

The project means construction of a factory manufacturing components of furniture in Kostomuksha and creation of a logging camp in Kalevalsky district to become a uniform complex of deep processing of wood. Thus everything will be used: the enterprises of the complex will sell furniture boards, saw-timbers, pine, fur-tree and birch balance, plank timber, fire wood to the population, technological wood chips and even sawdust in briquettes and granules and also to send bark and wood chips for heating. The total cost of the project which should be repaid in 7 and half years is estimated in 19 million euros.

The new enterprises will allow to create 500 new workplaces: 160 in Kalevalsky district and 340 in Kostomuksha, and the stable wages of workers of the enterprises will be higher than the average indice of the industry of the republic, guaranteed social payments are also meant. As the enterprises will be registered in districts, the budgetary effect as taxes for both territories in total will make about 45 million roubles per year. The agreement also means joint solution of the problem on reconstruction of wood-roads between Kostomuksha and Kalevala and the western part of Kuito lake. Negotiations about purchase of the complex process equipment were almost finished, necessary works on preparation of the industrial platform are conducted, workers who should work on preparation of wood have passed necessary training.

The Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, the Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia Pavel Chernov, the vice-president of Swedwood International concern Nils Skarbaek, the Minister of Economic Development of the RK Alexander Grishchenkov, the Chairman of State Committee of the RK on Forest and Mining Complex Vladimir Yuriev, the director general of Swedwood-Karelia Open Company Tomas Bergdal, the Head of administration of Kostomuksha Mikhail Yurinov, the Head of local self-government of Kalevalsky district Vladimir Stepanov and others have taken part in the ceremony of the official beginning of the project in Kostomuksha at the new industrial platform. Here, in Kostomuksha, the Head of Karelia has negotiated with representatives of the concern on further development of the project and the report in which the parties have positively mentioned the results of the work done was signed.
