The Head of Karelia held a working meeting with the Consul General of the Great Britain in St.Petersburg Mr.George Edgar

At the meeting the parties discussed social and economic situation in the republic and prospects of mutually advantageous cooperation in the sphere of culture, ecology, as well as western investments into timber processing.

It has been noted as the positive factor, that the foreign trade turnover between the Republic of Karelia and the Great Britain has positive dynamics. The amount of Karelian-British foreign trade in 2005 has made $57,8 million.

At the meeting Sergey Katanandov has emphasized that now the republic is in great need of skilled production experts and introducing modern technologies.

In turn, Mr.George Edgar has told about his trip to Olonets district and meetings with local population. In the opinion of the General Consul, more and more countrymen appreciate the reforms carried out.

The powerful diplomat has emphasized, that many newspapers of the Great Britain are printed on Karelian paper, and has expressed hope for establishing new economic relations with Karelian businessmen.

During the meeting the parties exchanged opinions on development of tourism, ways of solving environmental problems, on the order of issueing visas to citizens of Russia and England, on implementation of joint projects in the field of education and culture.

The Consul General Mr.George Edgar ha already been to Karelia last year as a member of the official delegation escorting HRH Prince Edward.

After the meeting with Sergey Katanandov Mr. George Edgar plans to take part in the actions organized by the British Council within the scope of the Clean City program.

In the capital of Karelia the Consul General will open a photo-exhibition North-South-East-West: Panoramic Sight at Climate Changes, and will take part in a round table discussion in the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science devoted to problems of climate changes.
