On December 25 in Moscow President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev chaired a joint meeting of the State Council and Security Council of the Russian Federation. The policy of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was discussed at the meeting.
Heads of regions of Russia have been invited To joint session of the State Council and Secutiry council. Karelia in Moscow was represented with the Chapter of republic Sergey Katanandov.
Opening the joint meeting, Dmitry Medvedev has told: «Cooperation with the CIS countries for our country is of exclusive, even of priority value. The key task here is to provide stable and friendly environment for Russia, and also to use advantages joint with these states for growth of national competitiveness, successful integration in regional and world processes and, of course, for development of full-scale humanitarian relations and support of rights of our compatriots.»
Today on the territory of the CIS there are two mechanisms of cooperation: military-political in the form of Collective Security Treaty Organization and economic - EurAsEC. However, matters at the joint meeting concerned strengthening of inter-regional cooperation. In the opinion of members of the State Council and Security Council, economic development of Russian regions will benefit by such form of cooperation which may be considered an anti-recessionary measure. "Sooner or later, the crisis will be over, and we should be ready to launch new projects with our neighbours," - the President has emphasized.
At the joint meeting of the State Council and Secutiry Council various measures on activization of cooperation within the scope of the Commonwealth have been considered. Dmitry Medvedev has called work on creation of the Customs union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus one of positive examples of economic integration.
Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov presented at the meeting has emphasized, that development of inter-regional relations was started in the republic a long time ago. Besides wide experience of frontier cooperation with Finland, Karelia has are agreements regions of Belarus and Ukraine. Activity in this direction will continue.
