Alexander Khudilainen met with the famous figure skater Irina Rodnina

Irina Rodnina, triple Olympic champion, deputy of the State Duma of Russia, visited Karelia on June, 27. The outstanding figure skater has come to our republic to take part in the third international Congress of Physical and Health Education Teachers propagandizing healthy way of life, organized by the Government of Karelia and held these days in Petrozavodsk.

Before taking part in the activities of the Congress, Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen met with Irina Rodnina. The issues discussed at their meeting were consonant with the basic objectives of the ongress. On the expression of Alexander Khudilainen: "The goal of the Congress is to inspire teachers of physical training with optimism, to make them realize that preservation of health of the nation is the task of the state."

Irina Rodnina hairs the School Sports Federation of Russia and implements School Club and School Sports programs focused on creation of school sports clubs in the country. The Federation sets the problem for itself to increase the number of children going in for sports to 80 percent. The deputy of the State Duma has suggested the republic to join these programs and expressed a high opinion of development of school sports in the region.

According to Irina Rodnina, Karelia now is the leader in the field of development of new approaches to physical training and playing sports among schoolchildren. "The republic was the first to understand that it is impossible to live without it any more, that everybody is sick and tired of physical training classes which we're used to, and it is necessary to improve the sports porgram to make it interesting to our children," she added.

Head of Karelia supported offers made by Irina Rodnina and spoke of his personal interest in development of mass children's sports movement in the republic. Alexander Khudilainen has explained, that he used to go in for winter sports. In particular, he was at the head of the Alpine Skiing Federation of the Leningrad region, and currently, he's a member of the presidium of the Russian Alpine Skiing Federation. "Unfortunately, we have lost the mass sports movement that was popullar in the Soviet times. It is necessary to search for enthusiasts, and the Government will think on the ways to encourage them, to shoulder the load of physical education teachers," said head of the region.

Alexander Voronov, acting Deputy Head of the Republic of Karelia and acting Minister of Youth Affairs, Physical Training, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Karelia, who also took part in the meeting, has reported on plans on construction of sports objects. Currently, the Sports ourtyard program assuming creation of one hundred athletic fields has been developed. Construction of the ice palace is launched in Petrozavodsk, and with the financial support of Gazprom there will be constructed three recreation and sports complexes, as well as 24 sports grounds.

At the end of the conversation Irina Rodnina has shared her impressions: "The new Head of Karelia understands everything in sports, he was a sportsman. I've got very good impressions. We have mentioned the issues of sports in school, outdoors, children's activities, availability of their activities. The main thing for us is to let to each child have an opportunity to go in for sports whatever way he or she wants."

Except for the meeting with Head of Karelia, on the trip agenda of the legendary figure skater there are visits to master-calsses and sports objects of Petrozavodsk, acquaintance to the Life is Motion exhibition and participation in the Congress opening ceremony.
