A delegation of the Paasikivi Society from the Finnish town of Imatra led by Mayor of Imatra Pertti Lintunen has come to Karelia. The delegation includes representatives of the authorities and business, teachers of history and social science. On May, 17 Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen had a meeting with the Finnish delegation.

The Paasikivi Society was founded in Helsinki in 1958 and was named after the seventh President of Finland Juho Kusti Paasikivi who has played an important role in establishing good neighbourly relations between our country and Finland. The society includes eminent representatives of the government of Finland, business circles, political and public organizations, historians interested in international public policy and international cooperation. There are branches of the society in many cities of Finland. The Paasikivi Society in the frontier town of Imatra is one of the most active branches.

The purpose of the visit of the delegation is acquaintance to Karelia and discussion of prospects of bilaterial cooperation.

– In April I've been to Finland as a member of the delegation led by Chairman of the State Duma Sergey Naryshkin and had an opportunity to meet with representatives of the Paasikivi Society in Helsinki. We are very glad that the ideas of good neighbourly relations established by President Juho Kusti Paasikivi are implemented.

Head of Karelia has mentioned that today the republic is making foreign trade more active, serious steps are made for development of partner relations with Finland, first of all, in economic and investment spheres. Alexander Khudilainen has reminded, that the law supporting investment activity has been adopted in Karelia, and, according to the head of the region, it is appreciated by investors, including our Finnish partners. Issues of development of transport and tourist infrastructure, international border-crossing points at the Russian-Finnish border are being solved.

In response, Pertti Lintunen has emphasized that for the frontier town of Imatra issues of cooperation with Russia are of primary importance, and the activity conducted by Head of Karelia to strengthen relations with Finland is appreciated.

During the meeting issues of bilaterial cooperation in various spheres and development of transport communication were discussed.

In the opinion of mayor of Imatra, organization of regular transport communication between Karelia and Finland will be in demand on both sides of the border. As Pertti Lintunen observed, tourists from Imatra take keen interest in Karelia. In turn, Alexander Khudilainen emphisized, that in republic is working actively on issues of organization of bus, railway and air service.

Program of the visit of the delegation of the Paasikivi Society to Karelia included trips to Petrozavodsk and Sortavala, a meeting in the editorial office of the Karjalan Sanomat newspaper, and a social program.
