Unveiling of the monument to Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Alexei Kosygin and President of Finland Urho Kaleva Kekkonen in took place on September 14 Kostomuksha.

These were Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Alexei Kosygin and President of Finland Urho Kekkonen who played key roles in emergence of a new town of Kostomuksha on the map of the republic. 35 years ago, on September 14, 1978 Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen have laid the foundation stone of Kostomuksha ore-dressing and processing enterprise. In 1983 Kostomuksha was granted the status of the town subordinate to the republic. Construction of the enterprise and the town at participation of thousands of Soviet and Finnish builders became the largest international project which range in relations between Finland and Russia remains matchless so far. This year the town of miners celebrates its 30th anniversary.

On the year of the double anniversary of Kostomuksha and the ore-dressing and processing enterprise the special role of Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen in strengthening of cooperation between the two countries was decided to be commemorated through construction of the monument in the town of miners.

Just like the ore-dressing and processing enterprise, and the town of Kostomuksha itself, the monument was made by common efforts of two close nations of Russia and Finland. The monument was made by a group of authors under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Alexander Kovalchuk, sculptor from Moscow. The pedestal of granite was made in Finland. Construction of the monument and land improvement were financed from the budget of Kostomuksha urban district and and private donations.

Numerous visitors from Finland including members of the official delegation, on-stage performance groups, people involved in construction of the ore-dressing and processing enterprise came to Kostomuksha to take part in the unveiling of the monument.

Our republic at the celebration was represented by the official delegation led by Head of the Republic of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen.

On September 14 members of delegations, the townspeople, veterans, schoolchildren, and cadets gathered on the square near the Concert and Sport Complex with the symbolical title Druzhba (Friendship) where the monument is established.

Telegrams of welcome from Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and Valentina Matviyenko, Chairlady of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, started the ceremony.

"Today's event is deeply symbolical for Russia and Finland which support close partner relations and sincere friendship. We cooperate actively in the most different spheres, we implement joint projects in economy, science, technology and arts. Sister-city relations between the regions and towns of the two states also develop dynamically. I'm sure that our urge towards strengthening of mutually advantageous cooperation, consideration of interests of each other will continue to form the basis of our relations. This is what Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen strived for," Ц D.Medvedev's telegram says.

Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen was the first to take floor at the celebration and has called unveiling of the memorial in Kostomuksha to be of historical importance.

Ц There are historical examples when personalities turned the course of history. The day of September 14, 1978 has become a landmark in history of relations between Finland and USSR. These were Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen who had managed to solve the issue of consolidation of efforts of the two countries in construction of the unique enterprise which nowadays is a leader in the economy of Karelia, Ц Head of Karelia said.

Alexander Khudilainen has assured the audience that the republic will keep on taking advantage of the prospects of cooperation between Karelia and Finland in order to implement mutually beneficial projects.

Secretary General of the Urho Kekkonen Society Seppo Sarlund has confirmed that relations between Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen were of historical importance, indeed, and remain beneficial for the citizens of the two countries.

Ц With gratitude at the foot of this monument we recall great achievements of these two people who have laid the foundations for long cooperation between the nations of Russia and Finland.

Chief Federal Inspector in the Republic of Karelia Alexander Hynninen and Head of the Administration of Kostomuksha urban district Alexander Lokhno also spoke at the ceremony.

The author of the sculpture People's Artist of Russia Alexander Kovalchuk, Chairman of the Commonwealth of Artists of Russia, has expressed hope that the location of the monument will become the townspeople's favourite leisure area.

Alexander Khudilainen and Seppo Sarlund were empowered to unveil the memorial. Afterwards members of delegations of Finland and Karelia, citizens of Kostomuksha, and cadets brough flowers to the new monument which will undoubtedly adorn the town.

Celebration of the 35th anniversary of the ore-dressing and processing enterprise of Kostomuksha and the 30th anniversary of the town continued in the Druzhba Concert and Sport Complex opposite to which the memorial is established.

Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen, the Finnish Parliament deputies Jouko Skinnari and Pentti Kettunen, acting Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia Alexander Selyanin, Chairman of the Finland Ц Russia society Heikki Talvitie, as well as those who participated in construction of the ore-dressing and processing enterprise and the town of Kostomuksha on both sides of the border addressed to the audience with words of welcome.

In the opinion of Jouko Skinnari, Chairman of the Group of Friendship with Russia of the Parliament of Finland, today Finland and Russia follow the path defined by Alexei Kosygin and Urho Kekkonen.

Valentina Pivnenko, deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, congratulated the townspeople and builders of Kostomuksha on behalf of Chairman of the State Duma Sergey Naryshkin.

The celebration participants recalled the course of construction of the ore-dressing and processing enterprise and the town. Alexei Gvishiani, Alexei Kosygin's grandson, has shared his memories of his grandfather. Timo Kekkonen, grandson of Urho Kekkonen, addressed with words of gratitude to those who implemented the signal project in Kostomuksha.

The concert that followed featured performances from Actors of Kantele National Song and Dance Ensemble of Karelia and on-stage performance groups of Kostomuksha.
