The All-Russian Tourism Week was launched in Karelia

The Role of tourism in Sustainable Development of the Russian North Forum was launched on November, 21 in the National theatre of Karelia.

The Forum took place within the federal Tourism Week held in Karelia by the Ministry of Culture of Russia. The main subject of the Forum was fulfilment of tourist prospects of northern territories of Russia, creation of mechanisms for cooperation between the state and business for sustainable development of the Russian North.

Our republic was chosen to be a venue for two federal events as a territory rich in tourist prospects and experience of successful development of modern tourism. Within the past two years Karelia has managed to reach top places in ratings of winter vacations and activity holidays. The republic has won two awards as The Best Russian Destination (for winter vacation and activity holidays) in Russia's longest-standing competition "Star of Travel.ru", which is considered the result of teamwork of tourist industry of Karelia. On results of the open vote, Kizhi is among Russia's top ten visual symbols. Such results were achieved through meticulous work concerning development of tourist infrastructure, development of new routes and active promotion of Karelia in the tourist market.

Before the plenary meeting Alla Manilova, Lubov Sovershayeva and other guests have visited the exhibition on the subject of cultural and tourist prospects of Karelia.

Ц Karelia has got something which makes breakthrough in tourism possible in the XXIth century, Ц Alla Manilova has told at the opening ceremony. Ц There are brands, historical parallels, tangible and intangible cultural heritage which today is the most attractive for Russian and international tourists. Exclusiveness, originality, uniqueness form the basis for success in tourism. You've got it all, let's involve it in tourist circulation.

Alla Manilova has added that on the part of the federal ministry the Tourism Week will become a take off event in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia. The Ministry of Culture of Russia will take the most active part in this work.

Ц Karelia may serve an example of active investment policy contributing to involvement of investors in financing of tourist infrastructure. For a long period of time the republic has been holding on of the top positions on the general tourism appeal among the regions of Russia. As a result, disregard of complicated economic situation in Russia, tourist flow in the republic keeps growing, Ц Lubov Sovershayeva has mentioned in her opening speech.

Assistant to the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Northwestern Federal District has called the necessity to create a tourism and recreation system uniform for the entire district the urgent problem of tourism development in the Northwest of the country. Implementation of the Northern Necklace project will facilitate solution of this task. Its main idea is to association of historical towns and settlements into architectural and landscape zones, as well as development of the missing infrastructure. The Kizhi State Open-Air Museum of History, Architecture and Ethnography may join the project in Karelia at the first stage.

Speaking at the Forum, Valentina Ulich has told about the task set by Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen before the Government of the republic: "To switch from quantitative changes in development of the branch to qualitative transformations. It is necessary to provide growth of contribution of the tourist branch to social and economic development of the republic. Tourism in Karelia means new jobs, self-employment, and development of small entrepreneurship. Tourist industry should be profitable for the budget and develop territories. We're facing an ambitious, though an attainable goal to make tourist industry by 2020 one of the components of the economic base of the republic along with forestry and mining industries."

Ц It is necessary to take advantage of opportunities of tourism, to make the Russian North famous for growth areas and humanitarian initiatives which our country needs today so much, Ц Valentina Pivnenko has pointed out in her speech.

According to the statistics quoted by Valery Kiryanov, Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Karelia for Tourism, volume gain of extrabudgetary investments in development of tourist infrastructure in Karelia in 2014 has made more than 10%. These investments have grown from 630 to 695 million roubles. The volume of rendered hotel services has grown by 13%. Since 2000 hotel accommodation of the republic has grown from 3300 beds to 8950. Karelia's strategic goal is sustainable achievement of the level of one million of organized tourists and holiday-makers, exclusive of independent tourists, by 2020.

Except for Karelia's experience, the Forum also considered best practices of Pskov, Arkhangelsk, the Nenets Autonomous District, and other regions. The work of the Forum continued in breakup groups where mechanisms of cooperation between the state and business for tourism development, historical and cultural heritage of the Russian North as a tourist resource have been considered. On November, 22 the forum participants have visited ethnocultural center Elämä, Pryazha region, and took part in the discussion on ethnotourism.

November, 29 the Tourism Week in Karelia will conclude with a conference The Value of Event Tourism in Development of Tourist Destinations of the Russian North in the town of Olonets and Olonets Grandfather Frost Games.
