On June 8, 2010 Karelia celebrates the 90th anniversary of the formation of its statehood.
On June 8, 1920 the Soviet Government has made a decision to establish Karelian Labor Commune (KLC) as a national autonomy included in the RSFSR. The Commune comprised territories of 41 volosts of Kem, Olonets, Petrozavodsk and Povenets uyezds. Petrozavodsk became an administrative center of the Commune.
July, 25 1923 by the decision of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom) of the RSFSR Karelia's status was increased to the level of the autonomous republic. Then almost the whole of former province of Olonets became a part of Karelia.
After the Soviet-Finnish war of 1930-1940 Karelian ASSR was transformed into Karelian-Finnish SSR on March 31, 1940. The status of the union republic was kept until 1956, when Karelia became an autonomous republic within the RSFSR.
In 1990 the Supreme Soviet of Karelia adopted declaration on the state sovereignty of Karelian ASSR and November 13, 1991 Karelian SSR was renamed into the Republic of Karelia.
In February of 2009 for preparation and celebrating the 90th anniversary of formation of Karelia President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has signed a Decree on the necessity to form a Steering Committee chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Russia Victor Zubkov. Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov was appointed the Vice-Chairman of the Steering Committee. A Steering Committee to prepare for the celebration has also been established at the level of the republic.
In November of 2009 the Russia's Government Executive Order approved the plan of main activities related to preparation and carrying out of celebrating of the 90th anniversary of formation of the Republic of Karelia. The plan includes specific events and a list of objects under construction and re-construction within the framework of preparation for the anniversary of Karelia. General financing from the federal, republican and local budgets and extra-budgetary resources makes more than 5 billion roubles.
Some of the anniversary objects are already operational – a swimming pool in Kostomuksha, sports and recreation center in Lahdenpohja, a gym, workshops and a dining room for pupils of Sheltozero school, a new school in the settlement of Sukkozero, stadia in Medvezhiegorsk and Olonets. The Music Theatre building was overhauled, the new light-signal equipment has started working at the Besovets airport.
By the Day of the Republic there will open the Kantele House, the second stage of the IT Park of Petrozavodsk State University and academic and laboratory building of the Faculty of Physical Engineering. There also will take place the ceremony of consecration of the Church of the Great Martyr Panteleimon.
The significant part of the plan is comprised of mass, cultural and sports activities. There take place many festivals, competitions, forums, exhibitions and presentations. The anniversary of the republic will be celebrated in all the regions and towns of Karelia.
In particular, for Petrozavodsk there has been prepared a plan of activities devoted to the 90th anniversary of Karelia. It includes opening of the Onego Palace hotel complex on the quay of the capital, the reparation of public transport systems, facades of buildings, etc.
In commemoration of the anniversary in history of the republic there has been instituted a commemorative token of The 90th anniversary of the Republic of Karelia to be awarded to the citizens of Karelia as a reward for outstanding service. The lynx mascot was adopted a symbol of the anniversary.
