Euroregion "Karelia" Cooperation Development
On March 28 a meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Relations V.Shlyamin and the State Secretary MFA of Finland Yuhani Valtasaari was held in Helsinki (Finland). The Ambassador RF in Finland A.Patsev, the leaders of the Commune Union of Eastern Finland participated in the meeting. In the course of the meeting the Euroregion "Karelia" project was discussed, and Yu. Valtasaari declared that the Government of Finland would support the joint project. Apart from that, the parties discussed the issues of the European Union Tacis and Interreg programs. In particular, the issue of the quota allocation for the Euroregion "Karelia" within the frames of the EU Tacis -Cross-border Cooperation program was discussed. The European Union is supposed to allocate funds for the Euroregion territory project, and they will be distributed at the regional level, at the sittings of Euroregion "Karelia" Executive Committee.
V. Shlyamin presented his talk in the Parliament of Finland, where he threw light upon the modern state of cross-border cooperation between the Republic of Karelia and Finland under new economic conditions.
The main goal of the meeting in the Parliament of Finland was to attract attention of the public and power
structures of Finland for the Karelian party.
On March 29 the III sitting of the Executive Committee of the Euroregion "Karelia" was opened in Oulu (Finland). The delegation of the Republic of Karelia took part in the sitting. The issues of the Euroregion activities, new projects within the frames of EU Interreg-III-A-Karelia and Tacis -Cross-Border Cooperation on the Euroregion territory, the "Program of Actions until 2006", the Tacis program "Euroregion "Karelia" as the Instrument of the Civil Society", the lead officials of the Executive Committee election were discussed at the sitting. According to the Euroregion "Karelia" Regulations, representatives of the Commune Union of Finland and the Republic of Karelia are co-chairing the Executive Committee. In 2000, the Co-chairmen of the Executive Committee were Tarya Kronberg and Valery Shlyamin. At the sitting a new representative of Finland was elected, namely the Head of Administration of the Commune Union Kainuu Hannes Kemplainen. Valery Shlyamin was re-elected, and he will be the Co-chairman of the Executive Committee from the Republic of Karelia.
