Regatta on Lake Onego

July 26-August 6, XXX regatta "Onego-2001"will be held in the Republic of Karelia. The total race distance is about 500 sea miles. It will take place on the Onego lake, starting and finishing in the capital of the republic.
First Onega regatta was held in July 1972, and only eight boats were competing in one hundred sea miles race. Since 1972 the regatta was given the status of the open Championship of Russia, and is recognized as the most prestigious one of this rank in the country. The competition includes race and a show program.
This year the race will be special, because of its30th anniversary. And given this fact, Sergey Katanandov, Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia, agreed to be the chairperson of the race.
"More than 50 yachts are expected. The republic will participate with seven yachts,' Eugenie Shorokhov, Head of the state committee on physical culture, sport, and tourism said. "We created a special logo for the regatta - the colored sail in the style of the Karelian banner. The winner will get a special prize from the Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia."
Ikar Riskin, Head of the race committee of All-Russian federation of sailing boat sport, has been for a number of years the head referee of the race. He believes, that the main objective of any regatta is testing new sailing boats of Russian make. This year at least three sailing boats will be tested. Besides, there will be
two referee boats, which will allow to hold competitions on long distance.
