PETROZAVODSK, July 26 /The ITAR-TASS corr. Vladimir Zlobin/.
The largest Russian regatta
"Onega-2001" has started today on Lake Onega. 49 boats from 12 regions of the Russian Federation and from Finland take part in it.
"The XXX Onega regatta is also an open championship in sail race," Evgueny Shorokhov, Head of the committee on physical culture, sport, and tourism said. " The sportsmen will cover 500 sea miles" (a mile is equal to 1, 852 km) during 12 days
Speaking about the history of the regatta, the Head of the committee said that the record number of boats - 164 - participated in it in 1987, including boats from England, the USA, France. The decrease of the number of participants might be explained by the economical crisis in the country. Still, the regatta has survived, and seems to become popular again.
