The State Council Gave High Assessment of the Working Group Achivements on Educational Reform Activities Headed by Sergey Katanandov

August 29 a sitting of the State Council attached to the President of Russia was held. The main issue was to discuss the program of educational modernization in the Russian Federation. The program was approved. The report on the issue was prepared by the working group, set up by the decision of the President of Russia, and a memebr of the State Council Presidium, Head of the Government of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov was in charge of the group activities. The President expressed his gratitude to Sergey Katanandov for his work and gave a high assessment of the working group activities.

Sergey Katanandov believes that it was Vladimir Putin who gave the main guidelines for the working group activities, " The President pointed out that education should be free of charge, that we should think of the state priorities of education, we had to support a teacher, the branch of education must be financed by the state."

The Vice-Prime-Minister of Russia Valentina Matvienko made a report at the sitting. She was very positive of the joint work of the State Council and the Government. Sergey Katanandov reported of the results of the working group activities and the main trends of educational modernization, which had been discussed with the Government.

The reports were followed by an animated discussion. Yu. Luzhkov, E. Srtoyev, regional leaders, members of the working group participated in it. All of them backed up the main line of the discussion education should be guided by the state, a teacher should be backed up by the state, and it should be a priority.

"I have to recognize that all the members of the working group have contributed a lot of their effort and time to accomplish the final document on educational reform, and we are proud of the final result of our activities."
