Sergey Katanandov: "We evaluate the results of the negotiations optimistically"

The negotiations of the Head of the Government of the RK S.L.Katanandov with the Prime Minister of Finland Paavo Lipponen were held in Helsinki on November, 29. The meeting has passed in warm, friendly environment, at complete mutual understanding of the parties. After completion of the meeting that had lasted more than one hour, Sergey Katanandov has commented on the results of the negotiations.

"It was a serious constructive conversation, - Sergey Katanandov has told, - we have informed the Finnish party on the most important results of our cooperation for the last four years. For these years 23 projects have been realized in Karelia together with our Finnish neighbors. They are the civil-engineering designs of clearing structures in Lahedenpohja, development of agricultural production in Priazhinsky and Olonetsky regions, joint projects in the sphere of procurement of timber and wood processing, and in the sphere of culture.

One of the very important for us is the complex project "Euroregion Karelia", which helps us with the assistance of the Finnish partners to involve the means of the European Union for the development of infrastructure of the republic, its telecommunications.

We have also discussed the problems of development of the railway transport: opening of a railway communication on the route of Petrozavodsk - Joensuu, the constructions of the railway Kochkoma-Ledmozero, and spoke about the necessity of support by the Finnish party of the projects of reconstruction of the national Finnish-Ugric school and National Theatre in Petrozavodsk. Mister Lipponen on the part of Finland has promised his support to these projects and has expressed his readiness to take part in the events devoted to preparation to 300-th anniversary of Petrozavodsk".

As the Head of the Government of Karelia has told, during the negotiations they have also discussed the development of the points of crossing the Russian-Finnish border. Once again Paavo Lipponen has confirmed, that the European Union allocates of 6 millions Euro for construction of the crossing point on Karelian territory near the settlement Piaozero. This project will be realized together with Finland. Within the framework of development of frontier cooperation it is also necessary to construct the station in the settlement Viartsila. At the same time the Prime Minister of Finland has reminded of the necessity of simplification of the procedure of crossing of the border, and at this point there are already appropriate arrangements made.

"I am very glad to that, - Sergey Katanandov has added, - that we had the possibility to speak directly with the administration of Finland and I evaluate the results of negotiations very optimistically. The problems, which we have discussed with the Prime Minister, will be at the center of attention during the forthcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Finland to Russia in March of the next year by the invitation of the Head of the Government of Russia Mihail Kasianov".
