40 cruiser yachts take part in the international sailing regatta on Onego, which has started in Petrozavodsk

PETROZAVODSK, July 21. /Correspondent of ITAR-TASS Vladimir Zlobin/. The largest in Russia international sailing regatta of cruiser yachts has started today from the quay of Onego lake in the centre of Petrozavodsk. 40 vessels from many regions of the country, and also from the Great Britain, Norway and Finland take part in it. The regatta is held for the 31-st time and has the status of the open championship of Russia on sailing.

"Total, the crews include 185 yachtsmen, - as the correspondent of ITAR-TASS was informed by the Chairman of the State Committee of the RK on Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism Eugeny Kotkin. - Many of them are skilled masters, winners of prestigious competitions. They are perfectly matched with the new head of the regatta committee, the tenfold champion of the Onego regatta, the judge of the international category, Dr.Sci.Tech. Rostislav Novoderezhkin."

According to the chairman of the State Committee young yachtsmen, the winners of the championship of Karelia on sailing also take part in the regatta. They form part of the adult crews. In total, within 10 days the sportsmen will participate in 5 stages of the regatta, which general extent is more than 400 sea miles or about 800 kilometers.

The first and the shortest regatta stage for the prize of the mayor of Petrozavodsk the thousand inhabitants and visitors of the city, who have gathered on the quay, could observe on July the 21st.
