This morning Minister of Culture and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation Alexander Sokolov has come to Petrozavodsk. Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia Pavel Chernov, Assistant to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health and Social Development Valery Boinich, Minister of Culture and Public Relations Galina Brun.

Plans of the two-day visit of the Russian minister include acquaintance with cultural and historical sights of Olonets area, as well as participation in the joint session of Committees of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on culture, on problems of the North and the Far East and Commission on preservation of cultural and spiritual heritage of the Public hamber of the Russian Federation.

As Alexander Sokolov has noted upon arrival in the capital of Karelia, it is not his first visit to Petrozavodsk. During his previous visits the Minister had to solve many vital issues of preservation of traditional culture of peoples of the North.

He has also reminded, that a special meeting devoted to restoration of Kizhi open-air museum, the monument of Karelian architecture, was held in Moscow recently. "All this work used to be called 'interdepartmental' is aimed at coordination of efforts of the most different ministries and departments, and authorities of all levels for preservation of culture of peoples living not only Karelia, but also in the entire North of Russia," - the Minister has told.

Today Alexander Sokolov will visit Olonets, Vazheozersky monastery and the village of Bolshaya Selga in Olonets region. Acquaintance to historical village is included in the program of the Minister's visit on purpose: in the village of Bolshaya Selga there has been created an ethnocultural center of Livvik Karelians. Alexander Sokolov will visit the Architecture of Bolshaya Selga - Memories of the Future exhibition, attend a concert of national ensembles, visit arts and crafts workshops and Children's art school. The first in Karelia rock opera Bjarmia of the director of National Theatre of Karelia Sergey Pronin in Finnish language will be brought to the attention of the Minister in the evening.

On the second day of his visit, on April 16, Alexander Sokolov will take part in the joint session of Committees of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on culture, on problems of the North and the Far East and Commission on preservation of cultural and spiritual heritage of the Public ?hamber of the Russian Federation on the subject of Culture of the Russian North. Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov, Chairman of the State Duma committee of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation G.P.Ivliev, Chairman of the State Duma committee of the Russian Federation on problems of the North and the Far East Valentina Pivnenko and the Archbishop of Kaluga and Borovsk Kliment will take part in work of the session.

The title of the key-note address of the session is On Perfection of Legislation of the Russian Federation in the Field of Protection, Preservation, Use and Popularization of Objects of Cultural Heritage. Legislative aspects of preservation of cultural and spiritual heritage within the scope of implementation of the Culture of Russia 2006 - 2010 Federal target program will be considered by example of the Republic of Karelia participating in the Culture of the Russian North complex project. Conversation on the value of objects of cultural heritage as a powerful resource of economic, social and spiritually-moral development of territory at the new stage of development of the Russian state will continue on Kizhi island.
