Delegation from the Republic of Karelia paid an official visit to Leningrad region

On November 21 delegation from the Republic of Karelia led by the Head of the RK Sergey Katanandov was on an official visit to Leningrad region.

Inter-regional cooperation between Karelia and Leningrad region has a long history. In recent years mutual relations of regions are formed on the basis of the Agreement between the governments of Leningrad region and Republic of Karelia on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation signed in August, 2000. Subsequently, the document was supplemented with a number of implementing protocols.

On volume of commodity circulation with Karelia Leningrad region is on the third place among regions of Russia after Moscow and St.-Petersburg. The volume of import of goods from Leningrad region to the republic in 2007 has made 984 million roubles and has increased by 43% in comparison with 2006. The volume of export of goods from Karelia to Leningrad region last year has made 1,114 billion roubles and has also increased by 13%.

Karelia delivers industrial wood, saw-timber, cellulose, cardboard, paper, fodder fiber, rubble and tractors in the neighbourinbg. From Leningrad region our republic receives fowl, foodstuffs, fabrics, jersey and various kinds of fuel.

Alongside with trade and economic exchange, year after year cooperation in the field of tourism, cultures and national policy, protection of law and order, education, sports, as well as in the sphere of local self-government development develops between Karelia and Leningrad region.

During this visit the city of Gatchina became the enter of events. There Head of the RK Sergey Katanandov and Governor of the region Valery Serdiukov have brought intermediate results of inter-regional cooperation. Besides annual increase in commodity circulation, officials have also pointed out specific joint projects. Thus, by common efforts road around Ladoga lake from St.-Petersburg to Petrozavodsk through Priozersk and Sortavala was assigned the federal status. It means, that the road will be reconstructed and put into working trim out of the federal funds, that will promote development of the entire Ladoga coast region, - Sergey Katanandov has noted in his statement.

Presentation of economic potential and investment projects of the two regions in which implementation it is possible to involve companies of both territories was held during the visit. Karelian party has offered the investors projects of producing heat insulating slabs, production of low-rise ooden homes, deep processing of wood, as well as the project of producing heating equipment and products made of talcum peach.

Cooperation agreement was signed by heads of Kondopoga region of Karelia and Gatchina area of Leningrad region. Agreements of the same kind are in force for four more municipalities. Such sister-cities' relations help areas to exchange experience of municipal work, activity in the field of education, housing and communal services, to enter into cultural exchange.

Members of the delegation from Karelia and representatives of Leningrad region have taken part in sessions of four round table discussions concerning joint youth policy implementation in territory of the two regions, evaluation of efficiency of activity of enforcement authorities and local self-government, implementation of state policy on development of small business and pressing questions of timber industry development.

Within the scope of the visit Valery Serdiukov has invited Sergey Katanandov to visit enterprises and social establishments of Gatchina. The officials have visited recently reconstructed Gatchina dairy factory of Galaktika, Ltd. On the equipment unique for Northwest the complete line of dairy products is produced there to deliver to shops of St.-Petersburg and Moscow. The excursion was very useful for the Karelian delegation, as upon commissioning new dairy farms in Olonets region the republic needs a new milk processing factory to be constructed. Therefore, Head of Karelia personally inquired about operation of the equipment, system of milk purchasing from farmers, and the neighbours' assessment of prospects of dairy market as a whole.

Sergey Katanandov and Valery Serdiukov have also visited school N8 of Gatchina which two years ago has moved to a new building. There a small pleasant surprise was prepared for the Head of Karelia: the school has unique in Russia children's museum of postcards, and by the visit of the delegation from the neighbouring republic the children have prepared the exhibition of postcards devoted to Karelia. The exposition included modern postcards, and rare images of Petrozavodsk and Valaam of the turn of the XXth century. At the exhibition opening it was decided that cooperation between Gatchina with Kondopoga will begin with establishing friendly relations between schools of the two regions.
