International seminar on rights of indigenous peoples has opened in Petrozavodsk

International Norms and Legislation of The Russian Federation in the Field of Preservation of Language and Culture, Traditional Way of Life, Nature Management of Indigenous Peoples: Norm. Theory. Practice seminar has opened in Petrozavodsk on November 25. It is organized by the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, the Commonwealth of Peoples f Karelia Karelian regional public organization, Ministry of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations, Institute of Language, Literature and Hstory of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Subject of the seminar has caused great interest among foreign researchers, experts from Moscow and 12 subjects of Russia. Heads of bodies of the government, local self-government, scientists, teachers, artists, and multinational comunity from Karelia take part in the seminar.

Good form for reflections and discussions developed at the seminar in the afternoon was set by the four lecturers delivered by the Minister of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations Andrey Manin; senior staff scientist of the Institute of Language, Literature and Hstory of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Chairman of The Vepsian Culture Society Karelian regional organization Zynaida Strogalshchikova, Ph.D. in history; director of the Department of Small Indigenous Peoples of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Lydia Vello and Dean of the Faculty of Law of Petrozavodsk State University, Head of the Chair of International and Constitutional Law Sergey Chernov, Doctor of Law.

Problems outlined by lecturers of the Plenary session and approaches to overcome them aroused the audience's interest. Breakup group work of participants of the seminar and the round table discussion are expected to be informative on the range of theoretical, practical and legal issues offered there. The seminar will proceed onl November 26 and 27 in the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Director of the Department of Interethnic Relations of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation Alexander Zhuravsky will deliver a speech at the final plenary session of the seminar.
