On July 13, at the briefing in the Government of Karelia Minister of the RK on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations Andrey Manin has told about carrying out of the regional target program of harmonization of national and confessional relations («Karelia — Territory of Harmony») .
On the official data, since the program was launched in 2007 in the republic there has been implemented more than 1,000 ethnopolitical, ethnosocial and ethnocultural projects; most of them have been carried out jointly with institutions of local government, public and religious organizations. In the program events there have taken part more than 30,000 people. Among participants of the international and All-Russia forums there were representatives of 18 countries and 26 subjects of the Russian Federation.
Special attention was paid to information and educational work with children and youth. In 2.5 years experts and public leaders have made 499 trips to regions of the republic. In meetings there participated about 10,000 young people.
With a view of studying public opinion and monitoring the program efficiency in 2008 there has been held an opinion poll Features of Interethnic and Interreligious Relations in the Republic of Karelia. According to the research, 71% of the pollees have declared about their tolerance to representatives of other nationalities and faiths, that was 11% more than in 2006.
The program stipulates carrying out of regional, All-Russia and international conferences, seminars and round table discussions, opening adaptation centers and cultural centers for migrants, carrying out of projects in the field of preventive maintenance of extremism and preservation of national cultures, and performance of publishing activities.
Andrey Manin has noted, that Karelia was one of the first regions in Russia where there such program was adopted. Now such documents are accepted in more than 50 subjects of the Federation.
Andrey Manin has also told about participation of the Karelian delegation led by the Head of the republic Sergey Katanandov in the visit of Patriarch Kirill to Valaam. According to the Minister, His Holiness has expressed intention to keep up the tradition established by his predecessor, and has told he was going to visit the monastery regularly.
