Currently, Belgium is not one of the major trade partners of the republic annual commodity circulation between Belgium and Karelia ranges from $8 million to $18 million. However, on a number of directions good prospects for teamwork are observed. In particular, Minister of Economic Development of Karelia Mikhail Yurinov has noted, that negotiations about purchase of forages for trout-breeding from Belgium are in progress. Cooperation in this branch can be of great interest for both parties, as now the republic produces about 10,000 tons of trout a year, that makes from 70 to 80 percent of the All-Russia production.

Besides, Belgia's offers in the field of advanced processing of wood, purification of water, gas, household and industrial wastes, small-scale power generation, energy saving and logistics may be interesting to Karelia. The latter is especially actual in view of negotiations about creation of a transport corridor between Norway, Finland, Karelia with access to Oktyabrskaya and Severnaya railways (two years ago Karelia has successfully presented this project in Bruxelles), as well as in view of inclusion of the White Sea port construction project in the federal program of development of seaports. Besides, cooperation between institutes of higher education in the field of information and communication technologies and in the sphere of projects for support of small and medium business is also possible. The opportunity of presentation of the new communication project of large company Alcatel-Lucent in Karelia was discussed.

Pavel Chernov has emphasized, that Karelia is open for investments, and has told about measures taken by the Government of the republic to support investors. In particular, these matters concern income and property taxes relief. Besides, under Pavel Chernov's direction there operates permanent working group which helps investors to handle emergent problems (regarding registration of necessary documents, professional training, connection to communications, etc.).

This is the first visit of Marie-Johane Roccas to Karelia. The Consulate General of Belgium in Saint Petersburg was founded a year ago in order to expand trade with Russia considered one of the most perspective partners of the Kingdom which exports up to 90% of production. Before her designation to the post of the Consul General Marie-Johane Roccas worked for Central administration of the Ministry of Foreign Affaires in Belgium and took the post of Attaché at the Permanent representation to the United Nations in Geneva (Belgian Presidency GATT), was the Spokesperson at the King's Cabinet, was Minister Counsellor in Madrid and after nominated as Economic Counsellor at the Royal Palace, served as an Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia and Consul general in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
