For all the citizens of Karelia it is a great honour to be by your side today, to pray together for prosperity of our northern land. Your Holiness, thank you very much for the help and support that you render to our land, for understanding the difficulties which our people is facing! We, the northerners, have always been 'the state people' and church-going and strictly observant, we always trusted in support of the state and in God. You have come on the eve of the holiday when the republic celebrates its 90th anniversary, and your presence brightens our holiday. Years, Your Holiness!

Even when I am far from Karelia, this icon will remind me of the Karelian land, will remind me the Saints who created the Orthodoxy and the nation-building foundation in this region, His Holiness said. I am happy that my visit coincides with celebrating the 90th anniversary of the republic. It is a truely important stage in life of the Karelian people. 90 years ago Karelia became a part of a large integrated state, and today it is a worthy constituent entity of the Russian Federation. Everyone who visits Karelia, admires it. And at the same time you feel that all this was created under hard climatic conditions. When in severe northern climate you see such a beautiful nature, such God's grace, then you understand that there is the God's seal on this land. There is His light!

When some people say, that Karelia is a poor land, I remember our marvellous, great history, history of Karelian land. More than five hundred churches, twenty monasteries, prospering theological seminary Karelia was the center of spiritual life in Russia. Petrozavodsk was founded as an industrial centre of Russia, villages, towns were built, agriculture and industry developed. It would have been difficult to imagine Peter's victories if there would have been no Petrozavodsk. It is no 'surburb' at all! It is an integral and glorious part of our country! That is why special responsibility now rests with the authorities, and with the church, and with the people who live here. It is the responsibility for revival of all this power and beauty. It is necessary to build, revive the industry, it is necessary to make homes comfortable. It is necessary to find resources to revive economy of this land and its former glory in modern Karelia, Patriarch said.
