This event was expected, indeed. The Karelian State Museum of Local History had no permanent exposition devoted to history, culture and traditions of peoples who occupied our edge for 30 years, and not because there was nothing to show.

For its almost 140-years history Karelian State Museum of Local History, one of the oldest in the Northwest, has collected many of unique exhibits. There are the birch-bark letter with Karelians' appeal to the Prince of Novgorod, and a geographical map where our republic was indicated for the first time, and muscovite mica found only here or in the museum of India However, some small rooms which the museum used to have just could not fit all this riches.

Now authorities of Karelia have transferred the museum the whole complex of buildings in the Round Square, and have assigned funds for reconstruction. Now the most rare museum collections appeared from the storeroom.

Guiding the excursion for the first visitors, Director of Karelian State Museum of Local History Mikhail Goldenberg has noticed that the permanent exposition became a true business card of Karelia.

"Yes, it is very important today that the new ideas and new brands appear, Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov has emphasized, I keep saying that the title of the land of woods and lakes is not enough for Karelia. It is the land of modern people, high technologies. However, we will never build new Karelia without taking into account our history, our northern culture, features of territory and traditions which laid down by the senior generations."

Head of Karelia has shown evidently that it is necessary to know the history and without the past one will never build the future. He told about petroglyphs, and about the first Russian gold mined in Karelia to the South of Segezha, and about iron ore which has given rise to Alexandrovsky factories and Petrozavodsk.

By the way, founders of the the permanent exposition have not laid aside modern information technologies. Now it is possible to learn more about exhibits not only from workers of the museum, but also from electronic stands and screens established almost in every room. Besides, in Karelian State Museum of Local History there have appeared a cafe and a gift shop. Sergey Katanandov bought here the first souvenirs T-shorts with petroglyphs. And sometime it will also become history.

In conclusion of the excursion journalists have asked Head of Karelia, whether he has liked the new permanent exposition. Sergey Katanandov has pointed out: "Since recently I try to evaluate things very cautiously. Let people make their evaluations. However, I'm sure: such projects are projects for everyone, not for some special class. I hope, all citizens of Karelia and guests of our land will visit this remarkable place with pleasure."
