Within the framework of celebrating the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Republic of Karelia the enlarged session of the Council of representatives of the VI Congress of Karelians, executive board of the Congress of Karelians of the Republic of Karelia, took place in the Elias Lönnrot Finno-Ugric Secondary General School of Petrozavodsk.
Council members from Petrozavodsk and municipal regions of the Republic of Karelia, representatives of national public associations of Karelians, Veppsians and Finns of the Republic of Karelia, Finland-Russia Society, the Karelian Language Society (Finland), public and local authorities of the Republic of Karelia, guests from Mari-El, Mordovia, Komi, St.Petersburg took part in the session.
Andrey Manin, Minister of the Republic of Karelia on National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations, Valery Markov, Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Komi and Chairman of the Consultative Committee of the Finno-Ugric Peoples, Mikhail Vasyutin, Deputy Head of Government and Minister of Culture, Press and Nationalities of the Republic of Mari-El, Alexander Luzgin, Minister for National Politics of the Republic of Mordovia, Secretary General of the Finland-Russia Society Merja Hannus addressed to the meeting with speeches of welcome.
Council members discussed issues of nature management, water consumption and land tenure, preservation of Karelian villages and traditional kinds of activity of Karelians, development and popularization of language and culture of the Karelian people. Special attention was paid to teaching Karelian and Veppsian languages at schools and higher educational institutions of the republic. In their opinion, teamwork of the state and the public concerning preservation and development of language potential of people, involving of the senior generation, families, children and youth in this activity is necessary and important.
The session heard the information on work of members of the Council at the local level in municipal formations of the republic.
Within the scope of celebrations devoted to the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Republic of Karelia Council members visited the Kantele House, the handicraft exhibition and a concert.
There also took place the ceremony of bestowal of awards to winners of the Republican contest for journalists writing in Karelian, Veppsian and Finnish languages devoted to the 90th anniversary of foundation of the Republic of Karelia.
The next session of the Council of representatives of the VI Congress of Karelians will be held in October.
