On September 7 and 8 a large delegation of representatives of business community of Finland led by Finland's Minister for Foreign Trade Paavo Väyrynen will arrive in Karelia on a working visit.
The delegation will comprise representatives of the Government of Finland, as well as heads of more than 20 Finnish companies engaged in logging and woodworking, power engineering, information and communication technologies, mechanical engineering, logistics, construction, service, environment protection.
The delegation will come with the purpose to get acquainted with the republic, strengthen contacts between the Finnish enterprises and Karelia, create new opportunities for business, study investment and economic potential of the region.
During the visit the parties plan to discuss issues of cooperation in the sphere of development of tourism, energy-efficient technologies, involvement of modern technologies and investments, first of all, in the sphere of forestry and processing.
Program of the stay of the Finnish delegation in the republic is eventful: meeting with the Head of Karelia Andrei Nelidov, participation in the Business Forum that will gather representatives of Karelian organizations and enterprises. Finnish businessmen will learn about the investment and economic potential of the republic, and then they will carry on business negotiations with heads of enterprises of the region to represent their opportunities for cooperation and preparation of further contracts.
Besides, Minister for Foreign Trade of Finland Paavo Väyrynen will visit the IT Park of Petrozavodsk State University where high tech products are developed and promoted.
On the second day of their stay in Karelia, on September 8, the delegation will go to the settlement of Impilahti, Pitkäranta region, to visit the Stora Enso factory and then to the Rapala enterprise in Sortavala.
Karelia and Finland have been supporting cooperation and friendly relation for many years, and Suomi is the key foreign trade partner for enterprises of our republic. The Finnish capital accumulated in economy of Karelia makes $130 million. This is 20% of the total volume of foreign investments. The largest enterprises at participation of the Finnish capital are Setles, Ltd., Karhakos, Ltd., Electrokos, Ltd., Elektromeka, Ltd., AEK, Ltd.
Within the scope of cross-border cooperation since 1992 in the republic there have been implemented about 430 joint projects with the Finnish party amounting to more than €30 million. The most significant of them are constructed treatment facilities in Lahdenpohja and Sortavala, sewage disposal plants in settlements of Helylä and Telman, Sortavala region, machine agricultural centers in a number of regions of the republic, etc.
Prospects of further development of the Russian-Finnish relations are, first of all, connected with launching of a new Karelia regional cross-border cooperation program between Russia and EU.
Visit of the Finnish delegation will enhance development of economic relations in the sphere of large and medium business, will help the parties to establish new business contacts and to strengthen trade and economic cooperation between enterprises of Karelia and Finland.
