Head of Karelia meets with the Consul-General of the UK

On September, 23 in the Government of Karelia there has been held a meeting between the Head of the republic Andrei Nelidov and William Elliott, Consul General of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Saint Petersburg who has arrived in our republic on a working visit. William Elliott has expressed a wish to make a personal acquaintance of the new head of the region and to discuss opportunities of development of mutual contacts.

Today the Great Britain is one of Karelia's traditional partners. Our republic delivers saw-timber, paper, cardboard to Foggy Albion. In turn Karelia receives mineral and chemical products and equipment. As of January, 1 within the territory of the republic there have been registered 7 enterprises with participation of investors from the Great Britain.

— Upon arrival of the new government we set a high value on international relations. Karelia should become a republic open for investments and partnership, — Andrei Nelidov noted. — Volume of British investments into economy of the republic is not very significant, yet we hope that in the future it may increase many-fold. First of all, it depends on us. We count on mobilization of investments from foreign partners both in traditional fields of activity, and in tourism, and on engaging the experience of our British colleagues.

Head of Karelia has also shared plans for development of flight connection with Moscow, St.-Petersburg and Finland that will allow to increase the stream of tourists from Europe, including from the Great Britain.

Mr.Elliott has supported the Head of Karelia has also expressed his hope that communications between the Great Britain and Karelia will become stronger. This process, in the opinion of the parties, may be started with joint seminars with participation of representatives of tourist business from Karelia and the Great Britain where businessmen could make closer acquaintance with each other and establish new contacts.

The parties have dwelled on an issue of cooperation between the youth of Karelia and the Great Britain. Today Petrozavodsk State University and University of Birmingham support close cooperation. For many years the North-European Open University of Petrozavodsk State University has been receiving international students. On its base young people from other countries learn within the programs of Russian language, and take special courses developed for international students in subjects other than philology. Among them there are many students from the Great Britain.

Youth of Karelia at the support of Karelian authorities takes an active part in the AWARD international programme of personal development. Many young people from Karelia participate In its various projects and programs.

The Consul General spoke cordially of the nature of the republic and its culture, and has also expressed a high opinion of works of Petrozavodsk State University which IT-center he has visited right after the meeting with the Head of Karelia.
