The III Pomor Congress
The III Pomor Congress of representatives of the Republic of Karelia, Archangelsk and Murmansk areas was held on September 26 in Byelomorsk at the support of the State Committee of the Republic of Karelia for National Politics and Relations with Religious Associations and local government bodies of Byelomorsk and Kem metropolitan regions.
Residents of Pomor historical settlements, representatives of Pomor communities have taken part in the Congress, while representatives of State government bodies and local government, institutions of science, education and culture, nonprofit organizations of the Republic of Karelia, Archangelsk and Murmansk areas and the city of Moscow became its guests.
The Congress discussed current problems of social and economic development of shores of White Sea and Lake Ladoga, including territories of the Republic of Karelia, Archangelsk and Murmansk areas adjacent to the sea coast, preservation of historical, cultural and natural heritage of shores of White Sea and Lake Ladoga, the coast-dwellers' cultural and household traditions.
The Congress has especially pointed out that the coast-dwellers have made a great contribution to development of the Russian North and the Arctic territories of Russia, having in many respects provided Russia's strategic priorities in development of the Arctic regions, have formed original Pomor culture which became a part of the gold fund of culture of the Russian Federation.
The Congress has adopted the final document which contains recommendations on preservation and development of culture and traditional forms of the Pomor household management.
