Karelia and Moscow are ready for combined starts

In July traditional Onego Regatta will take start once again in the open of Lake Onego. This year the Onego-2011 yachting competition is included in the Uniform planned schedule of inter-regional, All-Russia and international sports activities of the Ministry for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation. To prepare for the competition a regional steering committee chaired by the Head of Karelia Andrei Nelidov has been established in the republic recently.

On April, 12 the first session of the steering committee took place in the Government of the republic. To participate in it to Petrozavodsk came Mikhail Senatorov, Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, Chairman of the steering committee of The Bank Cup regatta, who has joined the steering committee of Onego-2011 as its vice-president. Participation of one of the organizers of prestigious yacht races of Moscow in preparation of the competition to be held in Karelia is no coincidence. This year, it was decided to combine two sailing regattas. To one of them, Karelian, it will allow to enhance prestige of the race, to the second, Moscow, it will help to achieve 'the great wave of Onego'.

Discussion of a plan of the regatta

The Onego regatta which this year will be held for the 40th time, traces its history back to 1972. As a tradition, it is the main sports event in the republic. Today it justly has a rank of the Cup of Russia. The new joint project will make it possible to bring new sportsmen to Karelia and to expand both the entry list, and the list of classes of yachts considerably.

During the meeting with the Head of Karelia held before the beginning of the session, Andrey Nelidov and Mikhail Senatorov have discussed practical issues of organization of this sports event.

As the Onego regatta is the oldest regatta in Russia where national championships were held many times, cooperation with Karelia is very interesting for us, Mikhail Senatorov said. The Bank Cup regatta organized by the Russian Yachting Federation and the Association of Russian Banks for the first time took place in 2001. In recent years up to 160 yachts of various classes took part in it. However, gradually the region of Moscow where the competition was held traditionally became too narrow for such a number of participants. Karelia is a remarkable region with beautiful nature, and we are ready to join our efforts to finance the Onego regatta, and to share the experience we've gained.

As a token of future cooperation organizers of The Bank Cup regatta have presented Andrei Nelidov with a symbolical copy of mooring bitts. In turn, Head of Karelia has supported the initiative of organizers of The Bank Cup regatta, having pointed out that such joint regatta will become an important event for the republic.

On behalf of the Government of Karelia we'll do our best to hold the competition in a proper way, Andrey Nelidov has emphasized. We consider development of tourism one of the main elements for development of our republic. The idea to revive the Onego regatta and to organize it at a higher level will help us to enhance prestige of Karelia. Therefore, we are absolutely ready to support this offer.

The conversation continued at the session of the steering committee in the conference room of the Government. On the agenda there were lots of different issues that occur inevitably at organization of sports competitions so prestigious and complex in implementation.

According to Alexander Voronov, Chairman of the State Committee of Karelia for Youth, Physical Training, Sports and Tourism, applications from 90 crews have already been submitted to the Committee from across Russia: Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Taganrog, Yaroslavl, Rybinsk, Nizhni Novgorod, Ekaterinburg, Magnitogorsk and other cities. This year within the scope of the regatta there will be also held the Championship of Russia among Quarter Ton yachts and the Cup of Russia among cruiser yachts of the OPEN 800 class. Now organizers face the task to conduct the regatta at the level so high, that it becomes traditional and the most significant event in sailing both in Karelia, and all over the country.

In the near future the steering committee should solve technical questions of transportation of yachts to Karelia, creation of the most-favoured status for yachtsmen, as well as organization of places for mooring, to plan cultural program of the competition. There is also another prominent aspect the regatta should give an impulse to a greater openness of water space of Russia for European ships, as Scandinavian yachtsmen, that Mikhail Senatorov has confirmed during the session, always turned with interest towards the East pool which is Onego and Ladoga. Creation of necessary infrastructure in the long term may involve many yachtsmen from countries of Europe to Karelia.
