Karelia celebrates Victory Day

On May 9 all people of our country celebrated the 66th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Hundreds of thousands of the people went into the streets and squares of Petrozavodsk, other towns and settlements of the republic to congratulate the veterans, to pay the tribute to the memory of the fallen soldiers.

There are many people from Karelia who died for the Victory, fought at fronts of that terrible war, forged the Victory on the home front. More than 500,000 soldiers and commanders of the Red Army have fought for Karelian and Northern fronts. It was recalled in the morning of May 9 in Petrozavodsk at the solemn ceremony at the Eternal Flame memorial.

Head of the Republic of Karelia Andrei Nelidov, Chief Federal Inspector in the Republic of Karelia Alexander Hynninen, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia Alexander Pereplesnin, Deputy to the State Duma of the Russian Federation from the Republic of Karelia Valentina Pivnenko, Head of Petrozavodsk city district Nikolai Levin, Government Ministers of the republic, deputies of the Legislative Assembly and of the City Council were in the square that day with other people.

Addressing to the townspeople and guests of the capital of Karelia Andrei Nelidov has congratulated everybody on Victory Day having thanked the war veterans and workers of the home front for their unparalleled feat: "Today's holiday is the most important for our country. All our history hings on the memory of people who had sacrificed their lives for the life of other generations. War veterans, first of all, set an example of what a modern peson, a modern man should be. And we'll do our best to preserve the memory of your heroic deed and make your present life dignified."

Chairman of the Committee of veterans of war and military service of the Republic of Karelia Major General Valentin Gromov, Head of Petrozavodsk city district Nikolai Levin, veteran of the Great Patriotic War Vasily Repnikov have congratulated the citizens of Petrozavodsk on the Day of the Great Victory. A Moment of Silence was held in honour of the fallen in battles during the Great Patriotic War. Wreaths and flowers were laid at the memorial.

Following the solemn ceremony the festive column led by the military band went to Kirov Square to take part in the parade. Units of the military community of Petrozavodsk, young cadets, members of military history clubs and search parties of Karelia have marched down the square.
