Last weekend has seen completion of the XLI Sailing Regatta Onego-2012 and The XIIth Bank Cup in Petrozavodsk. Combined efforts of two public organizations at the support of the Government of the republic have allowed for the second time to prepare and run a joint regatta on Lake Onego.
Competitions started on July, 19 with the race of the Dragon Olympic Class yachts. 12 crews toed the starting line. The distance of the race located in Petrozavodsk Bay of Lake Onego has allowed spectators to follow the struggle for prize-winning places from the shore.
On July, 22 the results of The Bank Cup have been summed up, and after rewarding the winners on the quay of Lake Onego in Petrozavodsk Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen opened the traditional cruiser part of the competition. The first at the start were ten yachts of Open800 class, seventeen Quarter Ton yachts and five 32 Feet class yachts. It is worth mentioning that among 150 participants of the regatta there were 19 women in crews.
This year 44 yachts from Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, Nizhni Novgorod, St.-Petersburg, Moscow, Yaroslavl, the Moscow area and Ukraine competed for the top places. Despite of the unstable wind, there took place five starts and as many finishes.
As the main judge of the competitions Evgeny Khromchenko mentioned, the races had it all – calm, and strong wind, and two-meter waves. There were breakages and falls out of the race, but these were single instances. As a whole, according to Evgeny Khromchenko, everything went without serious incidents. Safety during the races in the open of Lake Onego was provided by FSUE Morsviazsputnik. Special equipment provided by this company was established on yachts that allowed organizers and the State Inspection of Small Vehicles of the Ministry of Emergency of Russia to localize any yacht at any time.
On results of the races the winner in the Open800 class became Andrei Nikandrov's yacht Globus from St.-Petersburg. Leader of first three days of racing yacht Ogsa from St.-Petersburg is the second. On the third position there is team of Vostok from Moscow, Nizhni Novgorod and St.-Petersburg. The best result among Karelian sportsmen belongs to the crew of Julia-4, they are the 7th.
The crew of Go Beyond yacht from Moscow was the first to cross the finish line among Quarter Ton yachts. The second at the finish were yachtsmen of Real team from Nizhni Novgorod, the third place went to the crew of the yacht Veter from St.-Petersburg.
Yachts from Karelia competed among 32 Feet yachts. The crew of Avangard yacht from Petrozavodsk and Kondopoga has scored the best time, the second was the crew of Kondopoga, and Midnight Sun from Chupa was the third at the finish.
At the award presentation ceremony the prize of Head of Karelia to winners was delivered by Alexander Chazhengin, First Deputy Head of the Republic of Karelia for Regional Policy.
According to the competitions organizers, the work on preparation for the next regatta will start very soon. It is necessary to solve a number of complicated issues. The main one is absence of the marina port and conditions for moorage.
As one of the founders of The Bank Cup Anatoly Kondakov mentioned, he's been taking part in the regatta for more than 30 years, and today in the capital of Karelia there is no even the minimal conditions for moorage during the competition. At the same time, according to Anatoly Kondakov, water area of Lake Onego is considered one of the best in the country, and the Onega regatta is one of the main sports events of the year for yachtsmen.
Participants admit that thanks to integration to The Bank Cup The Onego Regatta regains its popularity, and this bright sports event, sportsmen are sure, is of far-reaching future.
They hope that the regatta of the next year will bring more participants to Karelia, the more so as it will take place on the in anniversary year for the White Sea-Baltic Canal. In 2013 we'll celebrate its 80th anniversary.
