On September, 12 the visit of the official delegation of Karelia to Finland continued. Upon a series of meetings with the country's top leadership and presentation of economic potential of the republic to the leading companies Head of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen and members of the delegation proceeded to the town of Lahti.

The visit to this town was scheduled for a particular reason. The subject of environmental conservation, development of energy-saving and waste management technologies that gain additional profits is quite actial nowadays in Finland.

The conversation turned to these spheres many times during the meetings in Helsinki. The Finnish party and Russian Trade Representation, that have organized the visit, have suggested the Karelian delegation to see the possibilites of combining high technologies and ecology, and see how both people, and nature benefit from it. Mayor Jyrki Myllyvirta cordially welcomed Alexander Khudilainen and guests from Karelia.

– I hope, that your visit to Lahti will give new opportunities that will lead to establishing of new contacts, especially between enterprises, – Jyrki Myllyvirta said. – In our strategy ecology is our number one concern. We wish our town to set an example in this sphere.

– We have found understanding and support of all our initiatives in Helsinki, and we believe in improvement of cooperation between Finland and Karelia. We hope, that visiting Lahti and the best practices which we see here will improve our understanding of prospects of cooperation, – Alexander Khudilainen said in response.

After the meeting in the city hall the delegation was invited to visit Lahti Science and Business Park. This organization is a typical representative of technological centers of Finland. In the 1980s there was a clothing manufacture, and it is a place for development of new technologies. Now the center has 600 employees, much more, than the former factory had.

The technopark promotes development of entrepreneurship, seeks innovative solutions for new enterprises. Currently, there are more than 50 projects under implementation, cooperation with four universities is supported. Most of the projects is financed from funds involved from the European Union. The technopark is focused on ecological issues. As a result, Lahti has become one of the leading waste management centers.

The Government of Karelia will use the experience of the technopark in Lahti in creation of the industrial park in one og the region os the republic and in its work concerning creation of a Technological Village, a special industrial zone for siting of international companies. Innovative developments of the technopark in Lahti are applied all over the country and at Kujala waste management centre which was also shown to the delegation from Karelia.

Thanks to such enterprises the number of dumps in Finland has reduced essentially in recent years. Today up to 90 percent of all waste is processed and then commercialized. It is achieved due to various technologies on sorting of waste which starts in every kitchen in every Finnish house and concludes at the waste management center.

The experience of the enterprise presented to Alexander Khudilainen and members of the delegation, will be used by the Government of Karelia and heads of regions of the republic at solution of problems with waste recycling and elimination of unauthorized landfill sites which is a burning issue in our region.

The visit to Lahti was the last item in the three-day program of work of the delegation. Now the Government of the republic, Ministry of Economic Development, heads of enterprises which have taken part in the trip, face the task to implement the entered engagements in practice and to develop cooperation between Karelia and Finland.
