Session of the steering committee for the preparation and staging of Onego Sailing Regatta took place in the Government of the republic

Session of the steering committee

Session of the steering committee

On February, 28 Alexander Chazhengin, First Deputy Head of the Republic of Karelia for Regional Policy, held the first session of the steering committee for the preparation and staging of Onego Sailing Regatta in 2013.

Onego Sailing Regatta traces its history to 1972, and since long ago it has become one of the trademarks of our region. Today Onego Sailing Regatta is considered one of the most prestigious competitions among yachtsmen, and is a part of the uniform planned schedule of inter-regional, national and international sports activities of the Ministry for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation for 2013.

The program of Onego Regatta '2013 will once again include races of popular Moscow regatta The Bank Cup in which Dragon Olympic Class yachts will take part.

Opening the session of the steering committee Alexander Chazhengin has reminded that the year 2013 in Karelia is declared Year of Sports, and this regatta will be held within the framework of this grand sports event. He has emphasized that quality of the preparation and staging of Onego Sailing Regatta in 2013 should be taken to a new higher level.

During the session of the steering committee issues of safety control, organization of moorage places, cultural and entertainment program of the regatta were discussed.

Members of the steering committee have made a pointed reference to the fact that the regatta will be also held on the year of the 80th anniversary of the White Sea-Baltic Canal.

The most pleasant statement at the session of the steering committee was made by one of the members of the Board of Founders of The Bank Cup Regatta Anatoly Kondakov. As he said, the yachtsmen have decided to give the prize money assigned by the republic to winners of the regatta on Lake Onego last year to charities. These means will be spent to purchase three yachts for children and bring them to the republic within the scope of Onego Regatta '2013 and transfer them to the possession of the Republic's Specialized Children's and Youth Sports School.

There's no doubt that it will figure prominently in popularization and development of children's and youth yachting in Karelia. For the same purpose a position of the yachting coach has been introduced in the Republic's Children's and Youth Sports School.
