The Sled Dog Race On the Land of Sampo in Karelia is over

The International Middle-distance Sled Dog Race (IFSS World Cup 2015 event) On the Land of Sampo held in the capital of the republic is over now.

On January 23-25 about one hundred teams from Russia (Moscow, St.Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kazan, Nizhni Novgorod, Murmans, Vologda, Voronezh, Samara, Tver, Rostov, Stavropol, Volgodonsk, and other towns), as well as from Czechia, Finland, Serbia and the Republic of Belarus competed at the city ski stadium.

The race track was laid through the territory of Kurgan sports center, as well as through the forest near the settlements of Lososinnoye and Mashezero.

Mikhail Shelkovin has won the 40 km mid-distance race for teams of 8-12 dogs on results of the competition based on the sum of three stages. The second in this discipline has become Olga Pavlinskaya, and Arseny Belorusets is the third. The winner on this distance with teams of 6 dogs is Martin Vrtěl, Czechia, Igor Klepcha has won silver, and Marina Boldureva has became a bronze prize-winner. Winners were also found in mid-distance races (6-8 km) and in skijoring. More information is available at the official website of the race http://en.gonka-sampo.ru/. The prize pool has made 1,200,000 roubles.

Alexander Voronov, Minister of Youth Affairs, Physical Training, and Sports of the Republic of Karelia, has congratulated the winners and participants on successful conclusion of the competition. He has thanked the mushers and their dogs for the festive atmosphere which attracted lots of visitors. Special acknowledgements were addressed to 150 volunteers from different regions of Karelia who had helped to hold the competition.

— Karelia is ready to be a venue for the World Sled Dog Championship. Conditions are very good here, so I suppose the application submitted by your republic is most likely to be approved. This event will be of great benifit for the republic, — Anne McIntyre, Vice President of the International Federation of Sleddog Sports, has told.

According to preliminary data, the number of visitors who had attended the race within three days has made about 30 000 people. Let us also remind that this year among the guests of honour who attended the sled dog race there was Alexander Orlov, Head of the Expeditionary Center of the Russian Geographical Society and Vice President of the Association of Polar Explorers.

According to one of the organizers Viktor Simonov, aide to Head of the Republic of Karelia, preparation for the next Sled Dog Race On the Land of Sampo to be held in 2016 has already begun today.

The competition was organized by the Ministry of the Republic of Karelia of Youth Affairs, Physical Training, Sports and Tourism, the Federation of Sleddog Sports of Karelia, Administration of Petrozavodsk City, Scythians Tour Ltd. and Snow Dogs Sled Dog Race Club.
